Kateshi estate is the largest coffee plantation owned by Northern Coffee Corporation Limited. It is in Northern Province of Zambia and has 2164 ha of total land of which 777 ha have been planted to coffee. Coffee development in the region started way back in 1975 when Zambian Government got funding from the World bank. Planting of coffee was initially done in two estates, Kateshi and Ngoli plantations. The Zambian Government aimed at diversification and stopping dependency on copper production. The coffee. The company was then called Kasama Coffee Company (KCC) and was wholly run by the Zambian Government. In 2012 Olam took over the ownership of Kateshi estate and other two estates, namely; Ngoli and Isanya. It has employed 177 contractual employees, 1000 year- round seasonal workers who are engaged in farming operations and 3500 workers per day during harvest season. The major variety of coffee grown at Kateshi estate is Catimor 129 and the altitude varies between 1330 to 1364 meters above sea level. Kateshi estate produces specialty coffee to niche markets.
